After the recent update of BS 5534:2014 coming into to effect in March 2015, the Standard has now been amended and re-issued September 2015 as ‘BS 5534:2014+A1:2015 Slating and tiling for pitched roofs and vertical cladding – Code of practice’. This Standard has developed in order to meet new regulatory requirements and design standards as part of changes to UK Building Regulations, European Eurocodes and industry Technical Standards.
It is an essential tool for all designers and specifiers of tiles, slates, shingles and associated products for pitched roofs and vertical cladding. Throughout 2015 manufacturers have worked hard to inform and educate the roofing industry that the tensile strength of mortar alone is no longer sufficient to fix ridge, hip and verge tiles and that all require mechanical fixing, and all single lap tiles will now require to be mechanically fixed with clipping sometimes also required.
The Standard has also had a marked effect on the use and limitations of lightweight underlays that have become commonplace in recent years. The new guidelines are in response to increasingly higher theoretical wind uplift, to ensure they are securely installed to reduce ‘ballooning’ in the roof space and transferring loads on the underside of the roof covering.
The Standard is more focussed on achieving quality and sustainability in the design and development of pitched roofs and vertical cladding in an attempt to provide best practice across all aspects of sustainable building design. The latest edition incorporates many small detail changes and minor amendments including a full review and update of the Bibliography.
Reference is now made to a brand new Standard for dry fix roofing products for slate and tile roofs being in the course of preparation. As a responsible manufacturer of quality roofing products and accessories, Hambleside Danelaw is committed to supporting all efforts to improve the quality and reliability of roofing installations. Hambleside Danelaw aims to do this through designing and manufacturing products that are fit for purpose, durable for a wide range of applications and promoting best practice for their use.
The Hambleside Danelaw team enjoyed two busy days at the Scotland Build Show in Glasgow on 25th and 26th November. The team met with local developers, architects, specifiers and merchants and presented our dry fix roofing products, manufactured in Inverness.
The show was a great success; it featured two days of industry insights in the seminars and conferences. The event was also a fantastic opportunity to meet key industry players in the Scottish region. Mike Lemmon, Area Sales Manager for Scotland, found this particularly useful, saying “it was great to meet fellow industry professionals from the Scottish region.
The team enjoyed raising Hambleside Danelaw’s profile in Scotland, and hope the attendees found it as beneficial as the team.
Hambleside Danelaw is pleased to announce the appointment of Neil Brown as National Sales Manager to the Pitched Roofing division.
Neil has been in the building and construction industry for nearly 25 years and has been managing sales teams for almost 20 years. With an excellent knowledge of the builders merchant and contractor market, Neil hopes to further this within the pitched roofing sphere.
Neil started in sales as Area Sales Representative for Spear & Jackson back in the late 1980s and quickly progressed to the position of a Sales Director with the Caparo Group. His career has seen him work for companies such as Neill Tools, Stadium Ventilation, Brett Landscaping and more recently the Wykamol Group and Richard Burbidge.
Neil commented:
“I am delighted to be appointed to this role within the company. Hambleside Danelaw has a very strong reputation for customer service and for delivering innovative solutions. I look forward to expanding UK sales and developing relationships to secure new accounts and contracts.”

Friday 29th May saw the end of an era as Hambleside Danelaw’s Roofing and Ventilation Divisional Director, Chris Dalgarno, retired. After working at Hambleside Danelaw for 28 years, Chris will be leaving to enjoy retired life with his wife and young daughter.
Chris joined the company in 1988 and started as a Sales Representative driving a van full of products, visiting customers. He covered the West Midlands and quickly progressed to Sales Manager in early 1990s. Chris was influential in taking Roofing and Ventilation from selling out the back of a van to a fully-fledged sales force. Having been influential in the product development side of the business as well as driving sales, Chris became Divisional Director in early 2000s.
As a valued colleague, the whole company was present to celebrate Chris’s excellent career and thank him for his dedication and commitment to Hambleside Danelaw. Chris was given a bike tool kit by the Hambleside Team, alongside a hammer and chisel to highlight his preferred forms of communication, and some DIY vouchers to thank him for his years of service.
Being highly revered and well-known in the Roofing and Ventilation sector, Chris retires from a long and successful career in the construction industry. The office ensured he received a good send off after being an integral part of the Hambleside Danelaw team.
The team enjoyed a busy day at the NMBS Show in the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. The one day event on the 16th April saw over 600 merchants attend to meet with suppliers from across the country.
Emma Hart, Sales Team Leader, Mark Holliday, Area Sales Manager for West Midlands and North Wales and Kris Brentnall, Area Sales Manager for East Midlands exhibited on the Hambleside Danelaw stand, taking orders and hosting the dart competition. Many merchants tried their luck at getting a bullseye, paying a pound to charity for each dart.
Dave Dixon of Oxon Fastening Systems Ltd paid £5 for 5 darts, and proceeded to get a bullseye on the fifth dart. He was the first to score a bullseye, followed by Tim Allen, Chairman of NMBS and Simon Denton from Bosch, a fellow supplier. We raised £68.00 for our chosen charity, Cancer Research UK.
The event was also a great opportunity to see old faces, and meet new. With over 200 exhibitors, the show remains the ideal time to network with members and fellow suppliers of the NMBS.
The main product on show was our Interlocking Dry Verge, the new, robust and design led product that is quick and easy to install and maintenance free. Interlocking dry verge is universal for most tile types and provides cost effective robust weatherproofing to the roof edge together with improved mechanical fixing of the verge tiles and creates a visual straight line appearance.
To find out more about our Interlocking Dry Verge or any of our other roofing and ventilation products, please call 01327 701910 or email sales@hambleside-danelaw.co.uk.
The updates to the BS 5534 have now come into effect, having been made mandatory in March 2015. Seen as one of the most influential updates of recent years, the revision has been published since August last year and manufacturers have been working hard to inform the roofing industry. The British Standard for Slating and Tiling acts as a key Code of Practice ensuring quality and reliable roofing installations.
Firstly, the new standard has set that mortar alone is not sufficient at fixing tiles to respective fittings on a roof, and therefore components including ridges, hips and verges will now require further mechanical fixing. Hambleside Danelaw carries patented industry leading Dry Fix products; it is now widely recognised that Dry Fix is a far more reliable method of installation.
Secondly, all single lap tiles will now require mechanical fixings to ensure a secure hold; clipping may also be required.
Thirdly, due to increasing extreme weather, the updates include the requirement for secure lightweight underlays. This is in an effort to reduce ‘ballooning’ as it has been calculated that there is increasingly higher theoretical wind uplift. This change brings UK slating and tiling in line with European roofing codes of practice, where in the past uplift has been notably higher and therefore is an existing roof requirement.
As many projects started before the law came in, the NFRC voiced concern in order to instate a cut-off date in order not to affected existing projects. Therefore the NHBC has applied a backstop until 1st July, after which all roofs must comply with the revised BS 5534.
In order to support a smooth transition to this change in standards, Hambleside Danelaw have now produced a mechanical fixing kit for applications where the traditional appearance of mortar bedded ridge and hip tiles is still required. The new changes may add more time and cost to a job, however the security for home-owners is significant enough to warrant the change to the standard.

Like others in the soaker range, the HD RTS come in left and right hand options
With the introduction of the new Redland 10 Series from roof tile manufacturer Monier, Hambleside Danelaw is at the forefront presenting the new HD RTS individual soaker. This new addition to the individual soaker range brings increased compatibility matches now covering almost all flat tile and slate types and offers another simple environmentally friendly solution to abutment details.
The HD RTS is an established proven design, adapted slightly for compatibility with the new Redland 10 series which incorporates the Richmond 10, the Saxon 10 and the Landmark Slate 10. Other thin leading edge tiles compatible with the HD RTS are the Russell Galloway, Lothian, Moray and Polden and the Quinn Devenish and Rathmore. The installation process is quick and simple – clip each individual soaker over the leading edge of the tile before placing the tile over the batten and against the roof abutment. The HD RTS sits on top of the tiles in the same fashion as the now well established and popular HD MDS, RRS and SRRS soakers. These differ from the recently launched HD DTS and RCS soakers, for interlocking plain tiles and slates, as they are concealed beneath.
Hambleside Danelaw’s individual soaker range is a great alternative to lead abutment soakers. They are manufactured from polypropylene which is lightweight, safe to handle, holds no value to thieves and does not cause unsightly staining from oxidation. All Hambleside Danelaw individual soakers are pre-formed, therefore do not need to be fabricated on site. Without the need for specialist tools there is a guaranteed reduction in labour time and the dry fix solution means that there is no need for mortar so they can be fitted in any weather conditions.
As with all Hambleside Danelaw individual soakers, left and right hand options are available and the upstands can be finished with lead or other cover flashing alternatives such as GRP (glass reinforced polyester). Please visit https://hambleside-danelaw.co.uk/pitched-roofing/products/roof-abutments/ for more details about the range.
Hambleside Danelaw is once again at the forefront of roofing product innovation offering a simple solution to abutment details. With two new products to add to the existing individual soaker range, there is now even more compatibly with tile and slate types. The production of lead soakers is time consuming and an expensive process which can be avoided by using Hambleside Danelaw soakers on abutments.
Our pre-formed individual soakers do not need to be fabricated or cut on-site, which guarantees a reduction in labour time. They are manufactured from polypropylene which has been specifically chosen for its thermal stability, resistance to UV light, acid rain and wide temperature range suitability.
Our two new soakers HD DTS for interlocking duo tiles such as the Forticrete Gemini, Marley Ashmore and Redland Duo Plain, and HD RCS for interlocking Cambrian Slate types both fit discreetly under the tile. The installation process is quick and easy. Simply place each individual soaker over the batten and against the abutment before placing the tile or interlocking slate on top. You can view our YouTube video showing just how easy it is to install the HD DTS duo tile soaker on our website by clicking here. The soakers’ upstand can be dressed with a traditional lead or alternative flashing, with no need to dress over the tile/slate maintaining the original appearance of a plain tiled roof.
Hambleside Danelaw have offered a range of individual dry soakers for over 30 years, compatible with most commonly available interlocking flat and plain tiles and natural/man-made slates. These have recently been brought to the forefront following NHBC’s expressed desire to reduce the use of mortar on roofs. There are many benefits for choosing the Hambleside Danelaw individual soakers. They are a great environmentally friendly alternative to lead abutment soakers as they are lightweight and easy to install without having to use specialist tools. They can be fitted in any weather conditions as the dry fix solution means that there is no need for mortar and the pre-formed solution saves time on site.
All individual tile soakers are available in right and left handed versions. Please visit our flashings page for more details about the range.
The National Merchant Buying Society (NMBS) held its annual exhibition in Telford on Wednesday 15th May. Hambleside Danelaw was in attendance to promote roofing products, meet with existing and new customers and network with members. Merchants were able to take advantage of discounted products and exclusive offers if they placed an order on the day.
Over 500 delegates came through the doors and 225 exhibitors took part. An eight foot tall mechanical robot, named Titan entertained guests throughout the day by singing, dancing and performing comedy impressions at regular intervals.
Chris Dalgarno, Richard Spreag and Emma Hart manned the busy stand. The first 100 people to visit received a free T-shirt depicting the Hambleside Superhero which was an effective incentive. Several enquiries were made to follow up on, including an enquiry about our new soakers. Chris Dalgarno commented, “The exhibition was a great chance to cement relationships and to put faces to names. We received some excellent feedback on our products and services.” Many orders were placed on the day which was an excellent achievement, and the merchants were pleased with the exclusive discount. All in all a successful day!
We have posted a new video to the Hambleside Danelaw YouTube channel for the Installation of the duo tile soaker (HD DTS):

The RIBA approved, core curriculum topics include:
Hambleside Danelaw’s HD TV15 series tile vents have been specified once again due to the advantages given by their greater airflow area and the subsequent reduction in the labour costs of installation. Hypo Style Architects in Glasgow have changed the tile ventilator specification for the Kirkintilloch Council project, refurbishing 145 houses in the first of 3 phases. The work is being conducted by the Campbell Construction Group and the HD TV15 series flush fitting tile ventilators are being supplied by Jewsons in Govan.
With an airflow area of 15,000mm2, higher than any competitive products on the market, the HD TV15 tile vents can be installed at less frequent intervals across the roof therefore less vents are required to achieve the required ventilation standard, saving both material and labour costs.
The project will now feature Hambleside Danelaw’s HD TV15/4 tile vents, for use with Marley Ludlow Major type tiles and Russells Cheviot type tiles. Hambleside Danelaw’s Dry Fix Bonding Gutter has also been specified; a unique mortarless product designed for joining dissimilar roof coverings on refurbishment projects. The patented design supports minimal disturbance to adjoining roofs.
Hambleside Danelaw’s range of roof, cavity and underfloor ventilation products, GRP flashings and ancillary roofing products are available from merchant stockists throughout the UK.
