Fast Flash is easily workable with tools or by hand

Traditionally applying roof flashing external areas can be a time consuming, highly skilled and labour intensive job. Depending on what material is used, it can also be potentially hazardous to the end user and the environment. We are extremely excited to announce the launch of our new lead alternative flexible flashing, Fast Flash!

With the common knowledge of an increasing skills shortage in the industry, Fast Flash is the ideal solution. 50% quicker to install than lead, extremely flexible, malleable and requiring no specialist tools to fit, Fast Flash can be used on multiple applications, including;

  • Valley head and eaves
  • Wall abutments
  • Chimney perimeters
  • Dormers and rooflights
  • Solar panels
  • Pipe flashings

Fast Flash is also compatible with a range of our other roof flashing products including our tried and tested GRP dry fix valley troughs and unique individual dry soakers.

Designed with a useful and versatile fully self-adhesive backing, Fast Flash is an environmentally friendly composite, comprising of an aluminium grid embedded in a polymer rubber that is available in three colours including the lead looking, traffic grey. This excellent lead-free material holds no value to the thief. The alternative colour options of black and red deter would be thieves from even entertaining the thought. Fast Flash has great stretching ability and can increase by 60% in length and 20% in width to suit a variety of detailing requirements.

A patented “wet in wet” manufacturing method gives the composite a great benefit. This process ensures that delamination does not occur – unlike alternatives that are layered and glued. Supplied in a protective film, designed to prevent damage during installation, Fast Flash is also the only lead alternative flashing that can be shaped to the desired profile using a dresser.

The secure and durable flashing is compatible with most commonly used roof coverings so only one product is needed in the van. No gluing or welding is necessary, due to the fully adhesive backing making it quick and easy to install. Off-cuts are reusable therefore leaving the user with minimal waste, reducing material costs.

Working with lead

The World Health Organization has identified lead as 1 of 10 chemicals of major public health concern. They state that “Lead is a naturally occurring toxic metal found in the Earth’s crust. Its widespread use has resulted in extensive environmental contamination, human exposure and significant public health problems in many parts of the world.”

The EU has already opted to ban or restrict the use of lead in many contexts from petrol to paints and even electronic equipment. Some European countries have banned the use of lead within the construction industry while Denmark has completely banned the import or sale of products containing more than 0.01% of lead compounds.

Although many clients, specifiers and some local authorities are now discouraging its use in roofing, the UK does not yet appear to be moving to a complete ban.

There’s no harm in using alternatives to lead

The popularity in lead alternatives is ever growing and manufacturers are responding to this demand. Modern materials offer lightweight solutions, easier and safer to handle at heights, preformed options to speed up installation. They also offer a long service life at a lower cost than traditional metals, such as lead, zinc and copper.

There is much ignorance within the roofing community with respect to lead and the risks that it presents. Under the Control of Lead at Work Act, there is a duty of care on all to use an alternative to lead whenever and wherever there is one available and this is something that materials suppliers and distributors should also be aware of to ensure the best health and safety of those working on site. Of course, these issues can be negated by minimising the use of lead products.

A fast flash solution

As well as the aesthetics, Fast Flash has none of the associated health risks that arise when working with lead. Due to its non-toxic properties, it is safe to use wherever there is a requirement to recycle water. It does not produce harmful run-off which makes it suitable for grey water systems. This is an important factor to consider with the current move toward ‘greener’ methods and materials. A warming environment and the predicted increase in yearly droughts and water shortages is changing the way we think.

We pride ourselves on providing quality products that are fit for purpose, reducing the need to return to site. Contact us today on 01327 701900 to find out more about Fast Flash and Hambleside Danelaw’s roof flashing products.

New Interlocking Dry Verge System

20151009_104508The HD IDV Interlocking Dry Verge system is new to the Hambleside Danelaw roofing product range for tiled roofs. The mortar free, all-weather IDV system provides improved design features and aesthetic appeal than other options on the market.

What makes the Hambleside Danelaw dry verge system different is the attention to detail. As with all our roofing products, it is quick and easy to install. The sculptured design gives style to the finished look, while numerous subtle details deliver performance and minimise water staining from rainwater run-off.

The system is designed to provide clearance for the installation of guttering and the ridge end caps are universal designs with integral closures to suit either half-round or angle ridge tiles of most commonly available ridge tile types.

Lightning quick waterproof abutments!

Soaker_ADFHambleside Danelaw is once again at the forefront of roofing product innovation offering a simple solution to abutment details. With two new products to add to the existing individual soaker range, there is now even more compatibly with tile and slate types. The production of lead soakers is time consuming and an expensive process which can be avoided by using Hambleside Danelaw soakers on abutments.

Our pre-formed individual soakers do not need to be fabricated or cut on-site, which guarantees a reduction in labour time.  They are manufactured from polypropylene which has been specifically chosen for its thermal stability, resistance to UV light, acid rain and  wide temperature  range suitability.

Our two new soakers HD DTS for interlocking duo tiles such as the Forticrete Gemini, Marley Ashmore and Redland Duo Plain, and HD RCS for interlocking Cambrian Slate types both fit discreetly under the tile. The installation process is quick and easy. Simply place each individual soaker over the batten and against the abutment before placing the tile or interlocking slate on top.  You can view our YouTube video showing just how easy it is to install the HD DTS duo tile soaker on our website by clicking here. The soakers’ upstand can be dressed with a traditional lead or alternative flashing, with no need to dress over the tile/slate maintaining the original appearance of a plain tiled roof.

Stand alone photo of the duo tile individual dry soakerHambleside Danelaw have offered a range of individual dry soakers for  over 30 years, compatible with most commonly available interlocking flat and plain tiles and natural/man-made slates. These have recently been brought to the forefront following NHBC’s expressed desire to reduce the use of mortar on roofs. There are many benefits for choosing the Hambleside Danelaw individual soakers.  They are a great environmentally friendly alternative to lead abutment soakers as they are lightweight and easy to install without having to use specialist tools.  They can be fitted in any weather conditions as the dry fix solution means that there is no need for mortar and the pre-formed solution saves time on site.

All individual tile soakers are available in right and left handed versions. Please visit our flashings page for more details about the range.

Hambleside gets caddies down to a tea

caddyHambleside Danelaw mainly earns its crust by designing and manufacturing products for the building industry from glass reinforced polyester (GRP) and injection moulded or vacuum formed plastics.  But in the true traditions of many British manufacturers, it has always been innovative and flexible in responding to challenging demands elsewhere. Hambleside Danelaw’s sister company, Hambleside Merchandise picked up an unusual online procurement request from Twinings last July for making bespoke tea storage jars – or caddies for Costa coffee shops.

Hambleside Merchandise approached Hambleside Danelaw with the brief from Twinings following several unsuccessful trials with 15 prototypes hand fabricated from cast acrylic.  Using acrylic for the tea caddies was the original idea from Twinings but it was too heavy, costly and fragile for the practicalities of working in the Costa environment.  A lightweight more robust material was needed and we established with the customer that injection moulded polycarbonate was a better alternative to hand fabricated acrylic for this application.  Not only was it lightweight but a third of the cost, clear, robust and shatterproof.

With proven in-house capability for design, detailed technical drawings and for seeking approval of technical data for safety certification, Hambleside Danelaw was able to undertake manufacturing at its own British facilities.  Before our moulding machines went into action, there were final discussions with Twinings about the thickness of the jar’s lid which was redesigned to give the illusion of being solid, where in fact it was produced in two parts and hollow reducing the weight of the lid from 230 grams to just 100 grams. Dimensions were agreed which guaranteed ease of use for the barista.

The end design resulted in the caddies being tapered to allow for removal off the shelf. Once all the design details had been agreed and technical drawings signed off, Hambleside Danelaw approached Great Central Plastics, a local firm that manufactures high quality promotional plastic injection moulded products to produce the bespoke tooling.  Production began in early December and within two weeks, 6,400 pieces had been made in sets of four.  When bases and lids were manufactured, a custom fit FDA silicone gasket was made to produce an air tight hygienic seal.  The labels were printed locally on clear self-adhesive vinyl and individually hand applied to the caddies by a team at Hambleside Danelaw.

All of the caddies were in place on 6th January and they are now clearly visible in the Costa outlets.  The Twinings team visited over 100 stores to check on quality and feedback has been extremely positive.  Today if you go into any of Costa’s 1,600 stores across the UK, you can buy Twinings teas as an alternative to your normal mocha, latte or espresso.  What’s more, they are beautifully displayed behind the counter and made easily accessible to the baristas in the new caddies.  Previously the loose teabags were stored in boxes out of view at the back of the store, but now Twinings’ profile within Costa has risen substantially because the caddies have provided eye-catching visibility for the new flavours. The second production run has just been completed and an additional 1,600 caddies have been sent out to stores. Twinings will also be using the caddies as a standard item to display their product in hotels and leisure centres, not just in Costa coffee shops.

Work has recently begun on the development of future versions of the tea caddy for Twinings and Hambleside has been granted permission to promote the jars as merchandise for storage of other products. This project is a fantastic example of how the diverse companies within the Hambleside Group can work together using specific skills and competencies.
