Roofing Products and BBA Certification

Selecting correct roofing products is vital in ensuring that new build or refurbishment properties are protected from the elements.  However, with a vast number of roofing accessories available on the UK market: how could the selection of roofing products be made clearer and easier?

One of the first things to consider is third party accreditation, used to evidence the product’s fitness for purpose and quality.  The typical third-party certification used for such products is assessed and certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA).

What is a BBA Certificate?

BBA LogoA BBA certificate is an independent third-party certification that acts as a mark of quality, showing that the construction product meets certain criteria while ensuring that the manufacturing process is consistently high calibre.  This is assessed through audits conducted by the BBA which occur every six months to ensure the required high standards are retained.

BBA certificates have now come to be expected, certainly by NHBC, when specifying various roofing products and systems including glass reinforced polyester (GRP) pitched roof flashing products such as Danelaw’s range of Valley Troughs, Bonding Gutters and Continuous Soakers.

Hambleside Danelaw and BBA certification

Hambleside Danelaw were the very first manufacturer to attain BBA certification in 1987 for these now ubiquitous products. Since this time, new and innovative designs have subsequently been added to the Danelaw range and BBA product certification such as the original and market leading Dry Fix Valley Troughs.

Building upon these market leading designs, Hambleside Danelaw are pleased to announce a reissue of their BBA Certificate 87/1915 that includes two new products introduced to meet changing market demands.

The first product is a new valley trough profile, the Secret Dry Fix Valley Trough code HDL SDVT1. It is developed from the original 1989 Danelaw patented dry fix valley trough but with the central upstand removed so that it is not seen when installed. It is intended for use in conservation areas and on heritage buildings where it replicates the traditional close mitred appearance for double lap tiles and slates without requiring individual soakers on each course.

As we are now facing more extreme weather conditions more frequently and therefore see an increased focus on the mechanical fixing of roof tiles, a new continuous soaker or ‘secret gutter’ for finishing roof tiles at abutments has been introduced. The new Contisoaker code HDL CSTC has been specially designed with a narrower profile specifically to be used without mortar and in conjunction with the widest range of tile verge clips likely to be required at the roof perimeter.
